A variety of festivals, cultural events, museums, historical sites and walking tours are a fraction of what Norfolk has to offer! In addition, recreational opportunities abound along Norfolk’s seven miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Norfolk lays claim to wonderful neighborhoods with a great variety of house styles and great neighbors. Norfolk is also well known for being the home of the largest Naval base in the world, the North American headquarters of NATO, the Norfolk Zoo, the beautiful Norfolk Botanical Gardens and Norfolk International Airport.
One of Norfolk’s most wonderful additions has been "Mermaids on Parade", a public art project that began in 1999 after Norfolk adopted the mythical combination of female and fish as its official symbol. The sculptures, which are 10 feet long and 4 feet tall, were cast by Norfolk sculptor Kevin Gallup, decorated by local artists and adopted for $2,000 each by businesses and civic boosters to raise money for the arts. They can be spotted gracefully gesturing in front of public buildings, rising out of fountains, dangling from the sides of buildings and even perched above rooftop gardens. Beginning in the summer of 2005, the city will attempt to bring heart health and mermaids together. With three separate walking trails covering almost the entire city, citizens and visitors alike will be able to view the mermaids and read their “stories” on these heart-healthy and adventuresome trails!
In this city of approximately 234,000 people, healthcare services are unsurpassed - cutting edge medical facilities include Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (featuring a Level -1 burn trauma unit and nationally recognized cardiac and transplant programs) and Eastern Virginia Medical School. All of these innovative medical facilities are located in close proximity to one another in a huge medical complex. Bon Secours - DePaul Hospital is also located a short distance away from this advanced healthcare site. Tremendous employment opportunities await with the numerous local, national and global companies that have chosen Norfolk as their home. In short, NORFOLK…..A GREAT CITY TO LIVE, WORK & PLAY!
