The history of Isle of Wight County began in 1608 when Captain John Smith met with the Warrosquoyackes, a local Indian tribe. Smith bartered for 14 bushels of corn to feed his starving group of colonists, newly arrived from England. The county government was established in 1634 and is one of Virginia’s eight original shires, making Isle of Wight County one of the oldest county governments in the nation. Nestled on the shores of Virginia’s James River, the county is comprised of two incorporated towns: Smithfield and Windsor.
Fort Boykin was built in 1623 to protect colonists from Indians and raiding Spaniards. The fort is located six miles west of Smithfield on the James River. Boykins Tavern was owned and operated by Major Francis Boykin. Boykin fought with Washington and camped at Valley Forge with him. He also served as a Lieutenant under Patrick Henry. Boykin inherited this land in 1780, as well as the house that had stood there in 1762. A smart businessman, he donated land for the Isle of Wight Courthouse of 1800 and even helped pay for the original courthouse, which is still standing and being used today, as well as the new jail. His tavern was conveniently located right next door for meals and refreshments needed by court officers and personnel, curious observers and travelers.
The Isle of Wight Courthouse of 1800 contains some of the best-kept pre-Revolutionary War records in Virginia. Many visitors to the Courthouse research the records to discover the roots of their families. The Courthouse still stands in the original place conveninetly located next door to the Historic Boykins Tavern.
